How Marble Murtis Are Crafted: The Art Behind Every Divine Sculpture

Artisan carving a Ganesh ji marble murti by hand

Behind every handcrafted marble murti are many hours of careful work by skilled artisans. Understanding how a murti is made also helps you judge quality when you buy one. Here is the journey from a block of marble to a finished devotional sculpture.

Quick answer

A marble murti is made in stages: marble selection, design and outline, rough carving, detailed carving, sanding and polishing, optional painting and finishing, inspection and packing. Each stage affects the quality of the final murti.

Step 1: Choosing the Marble

The artisan selects a block with the right tone and fewer flaws for the size and design. Stone quality affects colour, finish and how cleanly fine detail can be carved. Read how to identify real white marble.

Step 2: Design and Outline

The deity, posture, proportions and ornaments are planned, then the outline is marked on the stone. For a custom murti, the reference image and the required height are finalised at this stage.

Step 3: Form Carving

Excess stone is removed and the main form of the murti emerges, including the body, posture and base. Accuracy here decides the balance and symmetry of the final piece.

Step 4: Detail Carving

Faces, eyes, fingers, jewellery, clothing folds and symbols are carved with finer tools. This is the stage that most separates an ordinary murti from an excellent one.

Send your mandir size or a reference photo and we will suggest suitable designs.

Step 5: Sanding and Polishing

The surface is smoothed through several grades of sanding and then polished to a clean finish. Plain white murtis are usually finished here.

Step 6: Painting and Finishing

For painted murtis, colour is applied in layers, with hand-painted eyes, lips, clothing patterns and gold or warak detailing. See the shringar guide.

Step 7: Inspection and Packing

The murti is inspected for symmetry, cracks and surface finish, then packed carefully for delivery. Read about packing and shipping. You can also watch our marble murti process videos on the marble murti page.

Our murtis are handcrafted by artisans. Small natural variations in tone and texture are normal in marble.

Can I request a custom design?

Yes. Share the deity, posture, reference image and required height and we will confirm the design before carving.

Can marble murtis be painted?

Yes. Marble takes hand-painted colour and gold detailing very well.
